一九六五年原本在高中就組成「湯姆與傑利」（Tom and Jerry）合唱團的賽門與葛芬柯推出了＜沈默之聲＞，引起極大的迴響，促成這對雙人組在爾後近七年歷史性的合作。這首歌除了成為二人以「賽門與葛芬柯」為名的第一章正式專輯的名稱外，也成為一九六七年對於美國近代文化有深刻影響的一部電影《畢業生》的主要主題曲（整部影片皆由二人的歌曲配樂）。
高中時，我與多數年輕學生一樣，曾經瘋狂著迷於這對雙人組的優美和聲。他們多首膾炙人口的歌曲（如＜拳擊手＞"The Boxer" 與＜惡水上的大橋＞"Bridge Over the Troubled Water"）都是當時甚受歡迎的名作。其中＜沈默之聲＞因為在歌名與歌詞意義的曖昧不明中（什麼叫做沈默的聲音？）隱約傳達一種孤獨與不滿的情緒，反而更能勾動青春期被聯考緊緊箝制下無聲吶喊的心。台灣應該有不少四、五年級生，曾經在七０年代台灣在政治與教育諸方面都極其壓抑保守的社會氛圍裡，在夜深人靜時，隨著＜沈默之聲＞唱出的「暗夜，我的老友，我又來找你聊聊了」，將自己融入那種舉世皆濁我獨清的自憐氣氛裡。
